Laboratory grown blood has been put in a world-first clinical trial.

Teams in Bristol, London, Cambridge, NHS Blood and Transplant are involved in research project.

The main focus is on development of Red Blood Cells.

Red Blood Cells carry oxygen from lungs to the rest of the body.

Clinical Trial are being done to check how it performs inside the body.

Goal: Manufacture ultra-rare blood groups that are hard to get.

Beneficial for patients requiring regular blood transfusion, as in case of Sickle Cell Anaemia.

It takes about three weeks to develop at the right stage for transplantation.

Drawbacks: There are huge Financial and Technological challenge

It is hoped the lab-grown blood will be more potent than normal.
